Experienced Divers Know the Name Dr. Dario Gomez

Everyone knows Cozumel for its water.

The improbable spectrum of turquoise and cobalt. The reefs, among the healthiest in the hemisphere. The kind of visibility that allows a diver to drift above coral formations as if suspended in air rather than saltwater.

For decades, Cozumel has drawn those who seek depth. Not only the literal descent along a wall, but the deeper sensation of immersion, of being somewhere that still feels intact.

Yet depth has another dimension here.

Recently, we visited Dr. Dario Gomez to explore a subject most divers prefer not to dwell on, but quietly rely upon: what happens in the hyperbaric chamber.

We’ve known him for years. We’ve seen him at sunrise runs, at local sporting events, in conversation downtown.

Still, we wanted to sit down formally and ask the questions that matter, especially for those who dive often, travel thoughtfully, and consider Cozumel not just a destination, but a long-term horizon.

What emerged was not a story about risk.
It was a story about infrastructure, probability, and trust.

From Visitor to Specialist

Dr. Dario first came to Cozumel as a child. He returned during medical school and recognized the island as a viable place to build a life.

During his social service in Quintana Roo, he was already a diver. Over time, medicine and diving intersected.

Roughly 20 years ago, Divers Alert Network (DAN) brought him to Cozumel. He has remained since, specializing in hyperbaric medicine in a community of divers in the Costamed Hyperbaric Chamber ‘’member of the DAN Preferred Provider Program’’.

Cozumel conducts between 500,000 and 700,000 dives per year.

The island sees approximately 120–150 decompression-related cases annually. His facility handles a significant portion, especially those referred through urgency hotlines.

On its own, 120–150 may sound high. In context, it is a very small statistical percentage relative to total dive volume.

Decompression sickness (DCS) is uncommon.

Not Simply Diver Error

One misconception he addresses directly: most cases are not reckless divers exceeding limits.

Approximately 80% of DCS cases occur in divers who followed proper dive profiles and respected their computers.

Every dive deeper than 30 feet carries inherent physiological risk. Nitrogen dissolves into tissues under pressure. On ascent, it must off-gas efficiently. When that process is imperfect, bubbles can form.

Recognizing Symptoms Early

Symptoms vary widely:

  • Joint pain (often shoulders or elbows)

  • Numbness or tingling

  • Weakness

  • In rare severe cases, neurological impairment or loss of consciousness

The standard approach is simple: any compatible symptom after diving should be evaluated until DCS is ruled out.

The earlier intervention begins, the better the outcome.

Oxygen Is First-Line Treatment

Immediate administration of 100% oxygen at 15 liters per minute significantly improves outcomes.

Even if symptoms improve, medical evaluation remains recommended. Divers can contact DAN’s 24/7 hotline for referral and guidance.

When patients arrive at the hospital, they are stabilized and rehydrated before entering the hyperbaric chamber. The facility follows U.S. Navy treatment protocols.

What the Hyperbaric Chamber Does

Hyperbaric treatment addresses two issues:

  1. Nitrogen bubbles are recompressed and dissolved back into the bloodstream.

  2. High oxygen concentrations reduce inflammation and support tissue recovery.

Outcomes are generally strong:

  • 80–90% of cases are mild

  • About 99% of mild cases fully resolve

  • Severe cases may require longer recovery

Most divers return to diving after clearance.

More Than Recreational Diving

The chamber also treats local fishing divers, who face decompression as an occupational hazard. There are an estimated 80–100 fishing divers in the region, with around 10 significant cases per year, often more severe.

Beyond diving, the facility treats:

  • Diabetic wounds (especially diabetic foot)

  • Carbon monoxide poisoning

  • Soft tissue infections

  • Other conditions where increased oxygen delivery improves healing

In a region with high diabetes prevalence, wound care represents a substantial portion of cases. The chamber is equipped for adults and pediatric patients.

The Insurance Variable

Dive-related accidents, though rare, can have serious consequences, and the specialized treatment required, particularly in a hyperbaric chamber, can lead to prohibitive costs for divers without appropriate financial protection. The cost of a single hyperbaric oxygen therapy session can range from several hundred to a few thousand dollars, and multiple sessions are often necessary for conditions like decompression sickness (the bends).

Most standard, primary health insurance plans offer minimal or no coverage specifically for diving accidents, recognizing the activity as a high-risk sport. Or they often require extensive pre-authorization or may deny claims outright for treatment received outside of their approved provider networks, which is common when diving internationally or in remote locations.

A highly recommended solution for any active diver is obtaining specialized dive accident insurance, such as coverage provided by the Divers Alert Network (DAN) or similar providers. This specialized insurance typically represents a relatively small annual investment, often costing around $100 per year, yet it offers crucial coverage for hyperbaric treatments, emergency evacuation, and medical consultation services related to diving injuries.

The logistical and emotional benefit of having this coverage is substantial. In the event of a diving emergency, patients with DAN membership or similar plans can provide their membership number to the treatment facility. This streamlines the process, allowing them to proceed immediately with essential medical care without the enormous stress of negotiating billing, debating coverage limits, or navigating complex insurance claim procedures while under duress.

For seasoned and experienced divers, it is a proactive and responsible measure to safeguard their financial well-being and ensure immediate access to life-saving treatment in the event of an unforeseen accident.

Infrastructure and Long-Term Decisions

-It can truly happen to anyone. It happened to Ricardo, who has logged over 8,000 dives, and it also happened to our son Lucas at just 15 years old after two shallow dives, diving alongside both of his parents, who are instructors.

We are incredibly grateful that Dr. Dario was there to help us recover, twice, and that he has supported many of our dive friends over the years as well. We are even more thankful that we had an active DAN insurance policy in place.

There was absolutely no hassle: we simply provided our insurance number at the hospital, and everything was handled seamlessly, without endless calls or paperwork.

Cozumel has three hyperbaric chambers capable of treating decompression sickness. They are located near dive operations.

The island hospital is certified and equipped with major medical specialties, including trauma care, cardiac services, and surgery. Cruise lines frequently disembark passengers here because of reliable medical services.

For those considering extended stays, retirement, or property ownership, medical infrastructure is not incidental. It is part of evaluating stability.

Dr. Within the Community

After 20 years, Cozumel is home for Dr. Dario.

He raises a family here. He practices a specialized field that is relevant to the island’s core industry. He participates in local sports and daily life.

He also teaches. Dive medicine and hyperbaric medicine are rarely covered extensively in traditional medical training. His facility provides real-case exposure for young physicians and visiting professionals.

Research into decompression has contributed to broader understanding of inflammation, knowledge relevant beyond diving, including infectious diseases and systemic inflammatory conditions.

Hyperbaric medicine here is clinical, educational, and community-based.

Ask questions, know exactly where the hyperbaric chamber is located.

If you dive here regularly, or are considering spending more time here, it is essential that you act now to understand the systems behind the experience.

We are more than happy to guide you.
